One morning while I was out hiking high
I spied from afar two familiar faces passing by
I shouted out their names, from a place they couldn’t see
and we spent the afternoon in nature- feeling young and free.

But little did I know the weight that one of them did bear
though deep in my heart I probably knew something was there
years later down the line his life he’d take by his own hand
and leave us with a mystery to try and understand.

No, I don’t know how many times I’ve been in love
or when it first occurred to me to question God above
I feel like I can recall every place I’ve stood
when someone’s told me so-and-so had taken they could.

A mother wades into that undertow
a son found out he was strung out and so he chose to go.
That boy who passes too soon to ever be called a man
is frozen in our media; a modern Peter Pan.

The girl from the concert who passed on
I met her just that once- next I knew she was gone.
Strangely at that show I heard a drummer slipped away
and so they both are in my mind, thinking on that day.
