Adieu (Foolish Dreams)
03:57
|
|||
Goodbye, you foolish dreams
All about seeking fortune and fame
too bad you never came true.
So long, delusions of grandeur
sure hard to keep when you’re feeling poor
tell me, what more can I do?
See, I don't want to be frustrated for the rest of my days
I don't want to be frustrated for the rest of my days
Don't want to be frustrated for the rest of my days
What else can I do?
But bid adieu?
So long, to long lost love
it’s no longer you I’ll be dreaming of
though I always think of you fondly
And to old friends I no longer know:
How come we both let a good thing go?
It’ll always be beyond me.
I just don’t want to be heartbroken for the rest of my days
I don’t want to be heartbroken for the rest of my days
Don’t want to be heartbroken for the rest of my days
What else can I do?
But bid adieu?
So go on, pastures of green
the likes of which I never seen
though I could always hear you calling
Still at night, just to cope
I turn my head to the sky and hope
that I can catch a star that’s falling.
I just don’t want to be disappointed for the rest of my days
I don’t want to be disappointed for the rest of my days
Don’t want to be disappointed for the rest of my days
What else can I do?
But bid adieu?

Love and Fear
02:43
|
|||
I can’t wait ’til you arrive and show me who I am
My eyes blind at the thought I’d ever hurt you
Long past when I am alive my gentle lamb
Know that I never could desert you.
You’re another beam of light in a sometimes ugly land
and I cannot hide it all or make you understand
The best gift I can give is a gentle guiding hand
Learn from my mistakes, from my life unplanned.
But no matter, now you’re here and the music that I hear
is you crying to be held close and near
and it all seems to make sense, like it all lead up ’til now
It is simple to decide ‘tween Love and Fear
It is simple to decide ‘tween Love and Fear
It is simple:
decide ‘tween Love and Fear.

Accident
04:14
|
|||
Sit down, there’s been an accident
concerning our mutual friend
we might never see her again
because there’s been an accident
Stand up, when you can’t sit no more
lean your head on my shoulder that’s what shoulders are for
we all need someone to lean against
when there has been an accident
Lay down, when you can’t stand no more
lay your head on the pillow feeling truly alone
we all need a place to rest our head
when there has been an accident
But why don’t we start to fade
as mourners waltz in strict parade
Silhouettes on a paramount clear
their bodies broke in holiday cheer
Sit down, there’s been an accident
concerning our mutual friend
we might never see her again
because there’s been an accident
because there’s been an accident
because there’s been an accident

Doing Now
04:02
|
|||
Here I am, a million miles away, from where I was
Had to leave the past behind because it wasn’t getting me nowhere
What is she doing now?
Oh can you tell me
What is she doing now?
Somewhere, deep inside her life- perhaps with kids
She could be somebody’s wife- hers or his
What is she doing now?
Oh can you tell me
What is she doing now?
Here I lay, another night awake, way too long
Feel like a ghost of my past self- and the past is gone
What am I doing now?
Oh can you tell me
What am I doing now?
What am I doing now?
Oh can you tell me
What am I doing now?

We Know What You Are
04:04
|
|||
We know what you are
We’ve seen you before
Father Coughlin Detroit 1934
Joe McCarthy running trials on the senate floor
George Wallace blocking the way to the school room door
We know what you are
We know what you are
Just a piece of garbage demagogue
We know what you are
Y’all the same hide in the powerful positions
In all politics culture and religion
Jean Paul Sartre said it oh-so-true:
“Si le Juif n’existait pas, l’antisémite I’inventerait”
We know what you are
We know what you are
Just a piece of garbage demagogue
We know what you are
Ruby Bates got caught up in her time
But found her way to the truth beyond all reason and rhyme
We can’t all just say that we’re victims of circumstance
Then get up each day and do the same old dance
We know what you are
We know what you are
Just a piece of garbage demagogue
We know what you are
We know what you are
We know what you are
Just a piece of garbage demagogue
We know what you are
We know what you are
We know what you are
Just a piece of garbage demagogue
We know what you are

All People
06:03
|
|||
They should be here, not just a memory
you’ll get thoughts and prayers, god forbid you take a knee
and we’ve seen reason bent, strung up in a tree
freedom as a weapon in the land of liberty
What can I do but sing in protest?
People of Color die by bad police
What I can do is sing my protest
All People have the right to dignity and peace
All People have the right to live in dignity and peace.
Old history- teacher to the brave
drove those natives west for the land to be worked by slave
and we hold these truths to be self evident
from the pens of hypocrites on to this lament.
What can I do but sing my protest?
People of Color die by bad police
What I can do is sing my protest
All People have the right to dignity and peace
All People have the right to live in dignity and peace.
Sweet Elijah was only twenty three
when they forced him down and pumped him full of ketamine
and you can hear his cries on the audio
those people killed him, and he was just walking home.
What I can do is sing my protest:
All People Have The Right To Dignity And Peace.
Manny:
“It’s okay to say their names: Trayvon Martin, Sean Bell, Oscar Grant, Sandra Bland, Breonna Taylor”

Still I Wonder
03:39
|
|||
Well I grew up a prince just like that Buddha did
but I fell out the garden when I was just a kid.
Years later, down the line, no I didn’t die.
Poor people round the world just trying to get by.
Still I wonder…
Why is it so crazy to say:
“No child should ever know hunger
be left out neath the rain and thunder”
They say Jesus healed the sick and he loved the poor
but they drag out his name when they wanna beat the drums of war.
There’s people in a foreign land- wanna kill us, they say,
but my first terrorist was Timothy McVeigh.
Still I wonder…
Why is it so crazy to say:
“It’s so easy to hide behind that banner of fear
-a lot harder to sit down and look in the ugly mirror”
Islam’s a religion of peace; I know it’s true.
For a quarter of the world, that’s what get’s ‘em through.
You take an eye for an eye for an eye and the world’s blind
but the people at the top, I really don’t think they mind.
Still I wonder…
Why is it so crazy to say:
“Could there be something akin to universal love
that manifests itself as a great big god above?”
“Could there be something akin to universal love
that manifests itself as a great big god above?”
Still I wonder…
Why is it so crazy to say:
“Could there be something akin to universal love
that manifests itself as a great big god above?”
“Could there be something akin to universal love
that manifests itself as a great big god above?”

Hiking High
05:44
|
|||
One morning while I was out hiking high
I spied from afar two familiar faces passing by
I shouted out their names, from a place they couldn’t see
and we spent the afternoon in nature- feeling young and free.
But little did I know the weight that one of them did bear
though deep in my heart I probably knew something was there
years later down the line his life he’d take by his own hand
and leave us with a mystery to try and understand.
No, I don’t know how many times I’ve been in love
or when it first occurred to me to question God above
I feel like I can recall every place I’ve stood
when someone’s told me so-and-so had taken they could.
A mother wades into that undertow
a son found out he was strung out and so he chose to go.
That boy who passes too soon to ever be called a man
is frozen in our media; a modern Peter Pan.
The girl from the concert who passed on
I met her just that once- next I knew she was gone.
Strangely at that show I heard a drummer slipped away
and so they both are in my mind, thinking on that day.
No, I don’t know how many times I’ve been in love
or when it first occurred to me to question God above
I feel like I can recall every place I’ve stood
when someone’s told me so-and-so had taken they could.
No, I don’t know how many times I’ve been in love
or when it first occurred to me to question God above
I feel like I can recall every place I’ve stood
when someone’s told me so-and-so had taken they could.

Alas and Alack
04:37
|
|||
Sunlight streaming down, just liquid gold
though the spots in the treetops; Mother Nature’s manifold
Months later leaves blowing round, in autumns bold wind
you and I running up the hill to the big house, try to get back in
Yeah, and we were just kids
But Alas and Alack
there ain’t no going back
to the past that’s left us behind
Oh Alas and Alack
there ain’t no going back
to the past that’s left us behind
Just a box of letters, and a lock of brown hair
lay down on the fire, worry-free and without a care
No moment to pinpoint, no snapshot to hold,
nothing left to cling to, we were just doing what we’re told
Just doing what we’re told
But Alas and Alack
there ain’t no going back
to the past that’s left us behind
Oh Alas and Alack
there ain’t no going back
to the past that’s left us behind
Alas and Alack
there ain’t no going back
to the past that’s left us behind
Oh Alas and Alack
there ain’t no going back
to the past that’s left us behind

Noreen
04:17
|
|||
Now she was named for the sky: burdened, heavy with snow
but who gave her that name? I’ll never know.
So I just call her what I knew her as: Noreen.
Silver hair, a shade shy of white
-you could see her from afar on a warm summer night.
We’d see her coming, and we’d smile, and we’d all shout: Noreen.
Too quick for this world, too short for this time
I only hint at her on occasion in riddle and rhyme
But I can’t forget her- and I won’t forget her: Noreen.
Whenever the smile didn’t reach her eyes, you knew something was wrong
I reach out to her across space with simple song
I extend my hand to my old friend: Noreen.
I remember sweet Noreen, talking on the phone inside her kitchen
Sweet Noreen Oh
I was sitting close to her; she would talk and laugh and I would listen
Sweet Noreen Oh
I remember her, talking on the phone inside her kitchen
Sweet Noreen Oh
I was sitting close to her; she would talk and laugh and I would listen
Sweet Noreen Oh
I remember her, talking on the phone inside her kitchen
Sweet Noreen Oh
I was sitting close to her; she would talk and laugh and I would listen
Sweet Noreen Oh
I remember her, talking on the phone inside her kitchen
Sweet Noreen Oh
I was sitting close to her; she would talk and laugh and I would listen
Sweet Noreen Oh

Early Risin' Man
04:51
|
|||
Woke up around dawn
Put some coffee on
Poured me a cup black
As the sky, that was changin’
To an orange hue
Soon then to be blue
Sunlight peaking through
Outlines of trees
bent by breezes blowin’
Used to stay out all night
too torn up to stand
but those days are over now
cuz I’m an Early Risin’ Man.
Torn between extremes
Of nightmares and dreams
A voice inside me screams:
“hold onto the center”
Birds then start to sing
Flowers, blossoming
Grass all green and wet
cuz the dew ain’t burned off yet.
Used to stay out all night
too torn up to stand
but those days are over now
cuz I’m an Early Risin’ Man.
And when that sun goes down
You won’t see me around
I’ll be in my bed
My weary head, just straight dreaming.
Used to stay out all night
too torn up to stand
but those days are over now
cuz I’m an Early Risin’
Used to stay out all night
too torn up to stand
but those days are over now
cuz I’m an Early Risin’ Man.
Early Risin’ Man.
